WAMU Turns To The Dark Side

buildthemonorail.com has obtained an amazing email that was sent out by Washington Mutual to its employees:

Message for Washington State Employees about Washington Mutual’s Involvement in the Upcoming Washington State General Election

The nation’s Nov. 2 General Election is less than a month away. In the coming year, elected officials will be making key policy decisions that will greatly impact the financial services industry, Washington Mutual’s operations, and may influence Washington Mutual’s bottom line.

.... (non monorail section clipped) ...

Seattle’s Nov.2 ballot will also include Initiative 83 – voting “yes” on this initiative would effectively halt the Seattle Monorail Project (SMP) by barring the Monorail from city streets.  The Monorail, a planned 14-mile transit system extending from Ballard to West Seattle, is estimated to cost $1.6 billion and would be paid for by an annual excise tax of 1.4 percent of the value of a motor vehicle.  WaMu has become engaged in the Monorail debate because as downtown Seattle’s largest private employer, the company believes the Monorail will not deliver the kind of solution that improves transportation and relieves traffic congestion for the City of Seattle and for our employees.  There are higher, more pressing transportation needs in the region, particularly the Alaskan Way Viaduct.   Therefore, Washington Mutual is supporting the voters’ right to re-vote on the Monorail.

Unbelieveable. Another national, billion dollar business has staked out a political position against the citizens of Seattle so that they can enrich their own bottom line at the average person's expense.

Their logic is incredible - downtown's largest employer is against a fast, convenient system that will speed thousands of their employees between home and work every day. I wonder how many parking spaces they are including in their new building on 2nd. I'm sure it's a fraction of the number of employees they will have on the property.

It's very important that Seattle citizens make their voices known to WAMU. Tell them that a good company would work with their neighbors to create a high-capacity, high-speed transportation system. Good neighbors would never support an illegal initiative that aims to prevent a real transit system from every being built in Seattle.

Emails to employees are one thing, but huge campaign donations would be something different all together. We'll be watching campaign finance disclosures over the next few days. If WAMU makes a donation to kill the monorail, this is one Seattle citizen who will immediately cancel his WAMU account and encourage everyone else who supports real transit in Seattle to do the same.

Shame on you for seeking to enrich your bottom line via opposition to a voter approved transportation initiative. I will be encouraging all my friends to close business and personal accounts at WAMU and move them to a more progressive and ethical institution.

I for one am happy to see another voice spreading the word that "the Monorail will not deliver the kind of solution that improves transportation and relieves traffic congestion for the City of Seattle". Fix the problem instead of fixating on your "solution".

Some people might be happy to allow millionaire developers and billion-dollar national corporations use their power, money, and influence to destroy a rapid transit system that has already been approved by Seattle voters 3 times.

However, I think its a travesty. Seattle has historically been a city with strong, grassroots citizen involvement in its government and civic life. We could be witnessing the end of that if we let a few wealthy special interests get their way.

Seattle deperately needs an improved transportation system to move people around the city. We also need hometown companies that are good neighbors and that help build the city, not act as obstructionists and actively work to tear down our one chance to get us out of our perpetual traffic jams.

Whether you're for or against the Monorail, this is plain wrong

It is morally reprehensible that a company would so blatantly try to influence how its employees are going to vote. An employer exudes a great amount of influence over an employee. For a company to even have, let along state its “official” political position is to influence its employees. It’s equivalent to the Bush tactic of telling the American people “you’re either with us or with the terrorists.” In this case, WAMU is telling its employees they are either with the company or against it, and using a cheap emotional guilt trip to influence how their employees will vote. I really don’t know how I can continue to do business with WAMU. Time to switch back to Bank of America.

I can totally understand the Seattle voters frustration about the Monorail project. First of all, as noted before, the citizens have already voted three times and all three times it has passed. The monorail is not perfect. Very few of us like the fact that we are paying the excise tax on our vehicles. But, let's be real. By voting YES on I-83, you are truly showing that you DO NOT UNDERSTAND the process AT ALL. If you vote YES on I-83, you will not end the excise tax. They can continue collecting it until THE CORRECT METHOD TO RECALL THE MONORAIL IS USED. Instead, the backers of I-83 (i.e. Selig and now WAMU) are looking for a way to end the monorail without going through the proper recall porcess. Besides, I-83 has already been ruled illegal by one judge. And, in the end, it will be said that the initiative process cannot violate the Growth Management Act. So, why make things worse by endorsing an initiave that is illegal and does not end the authority to collect the Tax?
