WAMU Hit Hard By Boycott

Last Friday 25-30 Seattle citizens turned out in the rain to protest WAMU's donation of $85,000 to the campaign against the monorail. Many closed their accounts on the spot, resulting in the withdrawal of $171,000 from the bank. That is double what they've spent to spread lies and distortions about the monorail.

In addition, I've gotten email from others who either couldn't make the event or couldn't immediately close their accounts due to open checks, etc. That adds another $50,000 to the total.

UPDATE: Sources indicate that the total withdrawn from WAMU has exceed $1 million dollars!

Many people have asked why WAMU would risk alienating so many people in Seattle by working to block rapid transit in the city. The word on the street is that WAMU employees have admitted that the entire issue is nothing but a pet project of CEO Kerry Killinger. He's always been opposed to the monorail on a purely personal ideological basis. As a publicly traded company, I'm sure that there are many shareholders out there that would be interested to know that Mr. Killinger is hurting their shareholder value by using the company to fund his personal political agenda.

I'm one of the potential account closers. WaMu did WRONG on this, period.

Bon-Macy's made a "small" donation of $500 to the Yes on I-83 campaign. That was my money. I've spent $500 there in the last month. I wish I could get it back.

On October 21 I closed my savings account at Wa Mu (over $50,000). I am working on closing my checking account there but first have to move all my automatic payments to a new checking account at a different bank. I do not think it is appropriate for a bank to donate to a local electoral campaign, period, and especially in this case where it seems they are putting their real estate interests ahead of what is best for the city and its people. It makes me sad because I have banked with WaMu for many years, and was proud to have my savings in a local institution. I feel betrayed by their actions on I-83.

As a former Seattle citizen, I opened 2 checking and 2 savings accounts down here in L.A. when I moved down here. I was happy to engage in a bit of nostalgia banking at this familiar bank.

Sadly, I had to close these accounts upon discovering Washington Mutual's intense support for the development of some (rare) pristine land down here called Ahmanson Ranch (look it up!). I went to speak with Customer Service at my branch and they spouted some bull about what a great opportunity it was and blah blah blah. I further pressed them saying I did not agree so they gave me a special number apparently set up just for people like me who were upset about their involvement in such an irresponsible endeavor.

After calling the number and speaking with (or being spoken to) about their involvement, I decided to close our accounts and move them to (horrors!) Bank of America. There's a beautiful Wamu branch just up the street from us and it was very convenient to get to, but I couldn't in good conscience support their misguided projects.

After first hearing about their lame opposition towards the monorail in Seattle, I figured something at Washington Mutual must REALLY STINK and have made it my goal to inform as many people that Washington Mutual is not a responsible corporate citizen.

I always wondered if the Ahmanson Ranch deal was just an anomaly because the bank always seemed so cool, but now I know that this must be the kind of business they are.

I WILL NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH WASHINGTON MUTUAL UNTIL THEY GET RID OF SOME OF THESE CORPORATE MONKEYS WHO THINK THEY CAN WORK AGAINST THEIR OWN CLIENTS' BEST INTERESTS.

Many thanks.
