Are Monorail Opponents Simply Anti-Transit?

The Stranger had some interesting information on the anti-monorail campaign last week. It turns out that the monorail's opponents are so well funded by a single downtown developer that they can afford to pay their "volunteers" over $1,700 to drive and park their cars in support of the campaign.

Do any of the opponents ever take public transit? Do they realize that a majority of people that work downtown get there on a bus? Have any of them personally experienced the slow, late, standing-room-only buses that serve as the only form of transit in this crowded city?

I ride the #3 bus all the time, and everyone I know that has any experience with transit thinks that we're about 30 years behind schedule in creating a fast, convenient rapid-transit system in Seattle.

The green line will provide the first true rapid, high-capacity transportation system for Seattle. We've just got to fight off the right-wingers one more time to make it happen.

The tone of this website needs adjusting. There are many of us, so called right-wing, Republicans out here strongly in support of the Monorail. You would do better toning down your anti-right-wing rhetoric and focus on the issue that if I-83 passes there won't be a monorail in Seattle, EVER!

The economic development the monorail will support in Seattle is an often overlooked "right-wing" issue that resonates well. It isn't always about political correctness and environmental purity. The monorail will finally show that financially sustainable, mass, rapid transit is actually possible. Another "right-wing" issue is the dislike of government subsidies for ineffective solutions. Almost 75% of a bus ride is publically subsidises, 100% of a Tacoma light-rail ride is subsidised. The numbers for Central Link are not known yet, but we can expect the subsidy to something other than zero. On the other hand the SMP, at least on paper, looks financially viable with no subsidy.

Some 'right-wing" things to think about that make the monorail attractive to this group, whose votes are needed so aleniating them is not a good strategy.

Recently, while we were scratching our respective heads about "Why are They SO opposed to monorail," someone suggested that people who own downtown parking-garages might fear a loss of income with any rapid-transit into downtown. None of us, however, knew any dollar figures. Except, that it is expensive to park downtown.

For what it's worth.

I agree with you. I am not 'right wing', but I think the generalization hurts the cause. You will just alienate moderate 'right wing' voters that are for the monorail. While the people running the recall campaign may be extreme right wing, I am more worried about convincing the moderates who may vote against it for parking, route concerns, or not understanding the project. Keep up the good work on the site, just tone down the retoric a bit, and be careful of generalizations. The truth speaks for itself here.
